* Bhupinder Sandu , consultant paediatrician and gastroenterologist, has been elected president of the Medical Women's Federation. She is a founding member and past secretary of the British Society of Paediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition, is a visiting professor at the University of the West of England and has acted as an adviser to the World Health Organisation.

* The Ripon and Leeds diocese has appointed Matt Ward , currently chaplain at Coventry, to the Anglican chaplaincy at Leeds University from September.

* Cranfield School of Management has appointed Andrew Burke to the new Bettany chair of entrepreneurship. He was formerly a reader in enterprise finance and economics at Warwick Business School.

* St Mary's College, Twickenham, has appointed Rob Marshall , who was media adviser to the archbishop of York and a former BBC football reporter, head of marketing.

* Juan Pedro Aparicio , award-winning novelist, has taken over the directorship of the Instituto Cervantes in London.

* The National Institute for Careers Education and Counselling has appointed Ruth Hawthorn acting director, succeeding Malcolm Maguire. She has been a fellow of Nicec since 1990. She has also been a fellow of Lucy Cavendish College, Cambridge.

* Thames Valley University has appointed Chris O'Neil , professor, sculptor, head of Cardiff School of Art and Design and an executive council member of the Welsh Arts Council, pro vice-chancellor and dean of the faculty of arts, music and design.
