Sir John Arbuthnot, 60, principal of Strathclyde University, is to retire at the end of next year after ten years' service. Roderick Floud, vice-chancellor of London Guildhall University, and Howard Newby, vice-chancellor of the University of Southampton, have been nominated as candidates for chairmanship of the Committee of Vice-Chancellors and Principals. The result will be announced on April 30. John Bull has been re-elected CVCP treasurer unopposed.

David Green, director of Voluntary Service Overseas since 1990, has been appointed director-general of the British Council.

John McCabe, lecturer in the school of mathematical and computational sciences at the University of St Andrews, has been appointed chair of the examining board for the International Baccalaureate Organisation. He will be the main link between the academic and business parts of the organisation.
