Diana Walford , director of the Public Health Laboratory Service, has been elected principal of Mansfield College , Oxford, after David Marquand, retires in October 2002.
The composer and conductor George Benjamin has been appointed Henry Purcell professor of composition at King's College London . He will succeed Sir Harrison Birtwistle, who is due to retire this summer.
Umist has appointed Peter Fabian , of National Trust's northern regions, director of development; Tom Millar , professor of the Astrophysics Group, will succeed Ivan Robertson as pro vice-chancellor for staffing.
John O'Donoghue , research project manager for the National ICT Research Centre at the University of Wolverhampton, has been appointed visiting professor at the University of Wollongong . He was also elected fellow of the British Computer Society.
