*The Council of Gresham College has appointed Michael Mainelli , executive chairman and founder of Z/Yen Limited as the Mercers' School memorial professor of commerce from August 1 for a three-year period.

*Nottingham Law School has appointed Michael Gunn , academic, researcher and practitioner, to the position of dean. The role includes joint leadership of Nottingham Law School Limited, where he will work alongside managing director Phil Knott.

*The Royal Northern College of Music's Centre for Young Musicians has appointed: Geoffrey Reed , head of Sefton Music Centre, director; Philippa Bunting , course co-ordinator for the string training programme at Junior Guildhall, syllabus development manager for Guildhall Exams, assistant director (academic); Kate Buchanan , co-ordinator of the professional skills projects programme at Trinity College Music, director of supporting professional studies; and Jane Ginsborg , senior lecturer in psychology at Leeds Metropolitan University, research fellow.

* Iain Mattaj , formerly scientific director, has been appointed director-general of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory. He is a fellow of the Royal Society, London and the Royal Society of Edinburgh, among other prestigious organisations. In 2001, he was awarded the Louis-Jeantet Prize for Medicine.

* Elaine Shemilt , reader in fine art, has been awarded a personal chair in fine art printmaking at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design, Dundee University. She is the first woman in Scotland to be awarded a fine art professorship.
