Vince Cable's criticism of vice-chancellors' pay last week prompted lively debate online.
One reader writes: "The business secretary ought to get his targets right. Although v-cs do earn a lot in comparison with the rest of us in the sector, their salaries are peanuts compared with those of CEOs of large corporations and banks." Another responds: "Sure, v-c salaries are small compared with those in business. On the other hand, they are very large compared with those in charities of similar financial turnover. Is a university more like a public charity or a business?"
