In the biological sciences unit of assessment, the Institute of Cancer Research retained its place at the top after improving its GPA to 3.77, up from 3.55 in 2014. The University of Dundee also retained its second place from 2014, with a GPA of 3.7, up from 3.5.
A big climber was the University of Manchester, which came joint fifth after being ranked 21st in 2014. The University of Bristol moved 10 places from joint 18th to eighth, after improving its GPA from 3.15 to 3.53.
At a national level the Biological Sciences UoA has a GPA of 3.36, with Z per cent of its submission rated 4*. 2866.69 FTE staff were submitted to this UoA.
