Rumours that Prince William is heading north to study the history of art are "well-founded on speculation", according to Edinburgh University's press office, which stresses that all applications are confidential.
Should the young royal achieve the three grade B passes at A level necessary for his rumoured choice, he would come to a city with strong family links - holiday home, dukedom etc. Even so, if Cubie's recommendations are adopted, he will not be allowed to skip paying fees. Residency is determined by where students are living when they make their application. Applying while staying with his granny in Balmoral for the weekend is unlikely to count.
