Several delegates at the European Association for International Education's annual conference in Budapest discovered the hard way that entrepreneurialism and the worst excesses of the old regime can combine to devastating effect.

They were waylaid by sinister-looking men claiming to be members of the security police, who demanded to see their documentation and then made off with their wallets.
