After lengthy consultation, Beaver College, Philadelphia, has decided on a new name "to better describe the vibrant and respected institution that we are today". From next July it becomes Arcadia University. Arcadia, it explains, was "a picturesque region in ancient Greece, a birthplace of modern thought and learning". The word beaver has rather different connotations. In fact, administrators found some systems designed to screen out sexually explicit material from the internet were blocking access to the college website.
