Kel Fidler, the vice-chancellor of Northumbria University, has been named chairman of the Engineering Council UK, the body that regulates standards in the engineering profession. Professor Fidler, who took up his three-year term last week, said: "I hope to build the standing of engineers and show that this is a profession for the 21st century."
