A new distance-learning programme for Ethiopia's 31,000 rural community health workers has been awarded $4 million (£2.4 million) by the United Nations Children's Fund. A cohort of 1,000 community health workers will begin studying the first of four modules offered by The Open University on antenatal care, postnatal care, labour and delivery, and the integrated management of newborn and childhood illnesses this year.
