All eyes this week have been on Peterhouse College, Cambridge, Michael Portillo's alma mater, and, in his student days, reportedly a place of "high camp" where fellows and undergraduates were given girls' names, cross-dressing was encouraged and parties were held in meadows.
But a glance, post-Portillo's outing, should also be thrown towards the 1970s University of London. It was there that Portillo is supposed to have been introduced to his future lover, Nigel Hart, at a party thrown by one "Madge the Fladge".
