Abu Dhabi University was the big winner at the Times Higher Education Awards Arab World 2024.
The private research institution topped the most prestigious category, Leadership and Management Team of the Year, with the judges praising achievements across a broad range of areas that, taken together, “demonstrate clarity of vision and successful implementation”. The university also topped the Teaching and Learning Strategy of the Year category.
Victory for New York University Abu Dhabi in the Outstanding Contribution to Regional Development made it a hat-trick of wins for the emirate, a feat equalled only by Egypt.
Its three-strong haul included Fatma Alzahraa Abdelsalam Elkhamisy of Helwan University being named Most Innovative Teacher of the Year – a new category this year, and the first time that this strand of the THE Awards has invited entries from individuals.
There were two prizes each for Jordan and Morocco, with both of the latter’s victories coming courtesy of Kénitra-based Ibn Tofaïl University.
The winners were announced in a ceremony held at the University of Dubai at the close of the THE Arab Universities Summit. More than 400 entries were received from 15 countries and territories, with 96 finalists ultimately in the running across 12 categories.
Phil Baty, THE’s chief global affairs officer, said that entries featured “many of the excellent individual projects and initiatives that help to drive the region’s relentless progress”, with the winners being deemed “the absolute cream of the crop”.
