Higher education faces "ten years of change, complexity and uncertainty", Lord Dearing said at a speech given last week at the University of Hull's annual learning and teaching conference. Lord Dearing, author of a landmark 1997 report into higher education and an alumnus of Hull, said: "Change does not have to be bad news ... However, developments lying ahead for education provide a challenging time; the numbers of 18 to 20-year-olds has been predicted to fall, the overseas market should continue to expand, but competition will intensify."
