A scheme that offers learners access to a "gym for the mind" has won an award. The University of Sunderland's Explore programme is a lifelong-learning scheme that follows the model of gym membership. In return for a monthly subscription fee, members can pick and choose which lectures, short courses and discussion seminars they wish to attend from a range of subjects delivered by expert tutors, rather than having to commit to a single course. The scheme was awarded the 2010 Lifelong Learning Award by the Universities Association for Lifelong Learning, beating 16 other contenders to the prize.
