Manchester Metropolitan University will use the open-source Linux operating system, combined with IBM's DB2 Universal Database, as the platform for delivering education and training to 1,200 students on the internet. IBM claims this was the only solution to provide the necessary reliability, security and speed. It replaces a Microsoft Windows NT platform.
