Proposals to launch a University of Cumbria as early as August 2007 have been welcomed by the Higher Education Funding Council for England.
In a report published this week, Sir Martin Harris outlines plans to dissolve St Martin's College of Higher Education and Cumbria Institute of the Arts, which could reopen as a new institution with headquarters in Carlisle. The proposals are expected to be approved by the end of December.
