A heart-rending moment at last week's British Association meeting in Birmingham was provided by Gordon McGregor Reid of Chester Zoo, as he showed a picture of the last passenger pigeon, now extinct but once abundant in north America. "For someone in Britain," he said, "imagine holding in your hand the last ever blackbird or parrot." To baffled looks from the audience, he added: "I mean sparrow."
