I was sorry to see the letter from Sally Hunt ("Pay talks not lectures", 29 January). After explaining the University and College Union's stance on the difficult negotiations between it, the other higher education unions and employers, it descended into a personal attack on Bill Wakeham. Among his many unpaid roles, he is chair of the Universities and Colleges Employers Association.
Corporate governance in our sector is taken seriously. Reward packages for those who run our world-class universities and colleges are decided in reference to institutional and personal performance, as well as external factors such as pay rises elsewhere. These decisions are made by independent boards of governors.
Diana Warwick, Chief executive, Universities UK.
