Perpetuating poor language

For the past five years I have been complaining at my university that having the same Test of English as a Foreign Language/International English Language Testing System required for second or third-year undergraduate entry, and even MSc entry, is ridiculous ("Minimum English standard is set too low, tutors say", 7 February). If we require an IELTS score of 6.5 for first-year entry then we should be estimating how much improvement studying in English and living in the UK for one, two or three years will generate and set upper years/postgraduate entry requirements at a similar level. I have been ignored on the basis of "high-fee-paying bums on seats" even if they then graduate without a suitable standard of English, as might be expected with a degree from a UK university.
