Waste of a great tutor 1

April 13, 2007

One of Paul Buckland's students at Bournemouth University sings his praises as a fine teacher, passionate about his subject, a fair marker and someone who always has an open door (Letters, April 6).

As a former colleague of Buckland I can vouch for him being all of these and more. He is a person of the utmost integrity, and it comes as no surprise to me that he resigned rather than compromise his principles.

How tragic that someone of Buckland's calibre finds himself unemployed, and how lamentable that an institution calling itself a university is willing to undermine both staff morale and the achievements of students able to pass without internal reassessment by non-specialists and in advance of external remarking.
