Public vs private 3

April 20, 2007

Bill Rammell is right that "foreign recruits (are) no threat to quality" as your headline has it (April 6), but only if they get the right preparation for a UK university education. It is vital that English language and pathway courses are delivered to high academic standards by properly qualified staff.

That so many universities are willing to privatise this area of their operations is disturbing. There is a place for the private sector, but it works best in a partnership model, where the university has a stake in the success of international students preparing for UK courses and responsibility for the quality of the teaching.
