Free speech is sedition for some 2

January 5, 2007

The Academics for Academic Freedom's statement does not address the main difficulty facing academics who are prepared to speak out against the corruption of higher education by the attempt to convert it into a commodity.

This is the failure of the teaching unions to support those who have challenged plagiarism, fraud in scientific research, lowering standards, bullying and racism. And this is why the Council for Academic Freedom and Academic Standards exists. Academic freedom can be fought for only collectively. As Afaf is led by a joint president of the University and College Union, perhaps he could ensure the union gives its full backing to its members who stand up for academic freedom.

Cafas is asking the candidates for the post of UCU general secretary for a statement on how they would protect academic freedom.
