The US admissions system does have many merits. It has, however, been tested and scrutinised by the courts at every turn. The "Michigan cases" (Grutter and Gratz, 2003) follow a long line of cases over the past 50 years. For all interested in widening participation and affirmative action these are fascinating reading.
