Last week, Manchester University was pictured "just hours before being named Higher Education Institution of the Year" and how well the photographer captured its mood. Its thrusting twin towers appear to ooze a lofty disdain for any of the earthly rewards that the blurred passers-by could possibly confer on it. Yet one can just detect the pent-up pride and excitement that will be unleashed as it is called up to the stage at the ceremony. Thank God you weren't tempted to use a library picture.
