Your article on the advantages of studying at US universities ("The lure of the broad horizon", August 6) stresses the appeal of a diverse curriculum. Many North American universities were modelled on the broad, four-year Scottish system that still exists in Scotland. If this is indeed the attraction of institutions in the US, it would be a much cheaper option to study in Scotland where one can take up to five different subjects in the first two years before specialising in an honours subject.
