George Martin (Soapbox, August 6) is to be congratulated for supporting the boycott of London Metropolitan, but boycotts are not the only answer. How can external examiners be asked to refuse to mark scripts when they are marked internally? Ex vice-chancellor Roderick Floud told Natfhe in 2002 that the London Guildhall University contract would be the "default contract" for all staff. It is the breaking of this promise that is the origin of this crisis and gives staff the moral basis for their stand.
