Older academics can recall a time when the salary of a vice-chancellor was only 30 per cent higher than that of a professor heading a teaching department and many v-cs were distinguished scholars.
Nowadays, vice-chancellors earn at least three times as much as the professors on whom their universities depend for their reputation and in some cases have no more than a mediocre degree. Progress is indeed multifaceted.
