Charles Clarke may be confused and defensive about the comments he made at University College Worcester, but I am glad he spoke out and asked questions. What he said confirms the extent to which a materialist, instrumentalist and anti-intellectual agenda has pervaded the governing class. This underlines the urgent need for a serious debate about the role and nature of higher education.
