Chris Durston's letter ( THES , June 13) about how small amounts of research assessment exercise cash can be put to good use highlights the value of many 3A units. It also points out that some research may require smaller resources to prosper. I have long argued that funding council and RAE panels should consider a "value for money" criterion in their deliberations. My guess is that most 3A units would score considerably better on this than higher ranking units.
