The only rational, though short-sighted, argument for researchers limiting partners to those in other European Union states would be that the EU is a source of soft money ("European links are essential for UK research", THES, March 28). But when the EU gives money, its key purpose is to extend control - usually patiently, and in steps that can seem almost reasonable, but following a long-term strategy in the ultimate interests of none but the unaccountable EU political class and its armies of bureaucrats.
