Yiddish lives on

October 25, 2002

Readers of "Outcry as Soas drops Yiddish" ( THES , October 11) might think that Yiddish is no longer available at London University.

But Yiddish is alive and well across the road at University College London's department of Hebrew and Jewish studies, where more than 20 students are enrolled in Yiddish courses.

The department mounts annual Purim Shpils in Yiddish, and it put on a Yiddish play at the Bloomsbury Theatre, in conjunction with an international conference on Jewish theatre, sponsored by UCL's Institute of Jewish Studies.
