Leicester University's US funding coup is an achievement but it is not a first ("Leicester wins US funding for trial on red wine cancer drug", THES , November 8).
Twenty-five years ago at Middlesex Hospital Medical School London I assessed preclinically the abilities of vitamin A derivatives to prevent cancer. We too received funding from the US National Cancer Institute-National Institutes of Health.
