THE BRITISH Library is to conduct market research into the possibility of charging for the use of reading rooms. The library faces a Pounds 3.33 million shortfall in income in 1996-97 and a further Pounds 1.75 million shortfall in 1997-98. The research is likely to explore the possibility of differentiated charging with, perhaps, corporate users paying bigger fees while academics pay less or nothing at all.
