I too was surprised to read Kenneth Cardwell's article "Try teaching democracy in an occupied territory" ( THES , April 12). I was less surprised to read Professor Ruben's letter (April 19). Articles such as Cardwell's tend to be suppressed by journals that seek to present Israeli actions and their victims as moral equivalents. Where news of Israeli attacks on human rights gets into print, there is a swift reaction claiming anti-Semitism. If I wasn't inured to it, I would be appalled.
