The Educational Institute of Scotland is drawing up plans to celebrate its 150th anniversary this year, which it believes makes it the oldest established national teacher association in the world. When it was set up in 1847, its aim was "the promotion of sound learning", leading general secretary Ronnie Smith to claim: "We had a mission statement before it became fashionable."
