Gerald Mars complains about being paid only £105 for external examining (Letters, THES, March 9). Next time, he might try drawing attention to the minimum rates recommended by the Association of University Teachers. He is then liable to find the invitation unceremoniously withdrawn, so he won't have to do the job at all.
Believe me, I know. It happened to me last year.
