You suggest that art history may be considered (albeit unfairly) a “soft” subject (The week in higher education, 31 October). In Trinity College, Cambridge’s list of preferred subjects, however, it is considered a “generally suitable” arts discipline alongside English literature, history, Latin, Greek and modern languages. Art history has an eminent intellectual tradition stretching back to the 19th century and is certainly not a “non-traditional” subject.
