Appointed as members of thecouncil: James Hough, professor at the University of Hertfordshire; Andrew Lyne, professor at Nuffield Radio Astronomy Laboratory, Jodrell Bank, Manchester University;David Saxon, professor at Glasgow University.

Medical Research Council William Marslen-Wilson, professor of psychology at Birkbeck College, University of London, is to be director of the applied psychology unit, Cambridge.

University of Cambridge David Harrison, master of Selwyn College, has been appointed as the university's second pro vice chancellor.

Timothy Mead, secretary and registrar at the University of Kent at Canterbury, has been appointed as registrary, succeeding Stephen Fleet on his retirement.

The Fulbright Commission The following are appointed: Deborah Owen, literary agent and former member of the Fulbright Advisory Board; Gary McDowell, professor and director of the institute of US studies at the University of London; C. Duncan Rice, vice chancellor of the University of Aberdeen.

Stoke on Trent College Graham Moore, former principal at Stratford upon Avon College, has been appointed principal of Stoke on Trent College from May 1.

Natural Resources Institute John Perfect, chair of the European Scientific Environmental Monitoring Group and the European Consultative Group for Integrated Pest Management, is appointed director of the institute. David Wills, on secondment from the University of Greenwich, will act as director until the end of the financial year.
