MONEY for teaching postgraduate research students will be distributed evenly between high-performing departments. The English funding council will no longer fund them in departments rated 1 or 2 in the latest research assessment exercise. It will allocate cash for them in their second and third years through its research stream rather than channelling it through teaching. But it has decided against reallocating the money even more selectively, using the quality rating model. This means universities can expect the same per capita funding for students whether they are in a 3b or 5* department.
