AN INDEPENDENT assessment of three Higher Education Funding Council for Wales initiatives designed to boost Welsh research has found clear evidence of success. "Development of Research Potential" cost Pounds 3.8 million and aimed to foster research potential in former public sector institutions. Research ratings in DevR-funded departments were considerably higher than those not funded. The $6.85 million for "Research Quality" was designed to strengthen infrastructure in top research departments. It also improved ratings.
