In the High Court last week, The THES apologised to the author and historian Orlando Figes over an article published on May 2, "Plagiarise. . . only be sure to call it research." The article referred to various allegations of plagiarism and regrettably suggested that Richard Pipes's allegations against Dr Figes over his award-winning book A People's Tragedy might be "more serious" than others.
Once the facts were drawn to the attention of The THES, we accepted that Dr Figes had not stolen any of Professor Pipes's work, that the headline had been inappropriate and that an apology was in order. On this basis the matter has been resolved amicably.
