The Higher Education Statistics Agency's findings for 1995/96 reveal that: *The total number of academic staff was 126,582, an increase of 10 per cent on the previous year *86 per cent of staff in higher education institutions had been at the same institution the previous year *Of the 6,129 staff who left higher education institutions, 21 per cent retired and 18 per cent moved to another institution
