A case of mistaken identity saved junior education minister Alan Howarth from an uncomfortable few minutes in the company of another new Labour member whose memory inconveniently stretches back to the time when Mr Howarth was Conservative minister for further and higher education. The new MP had to be told that the chap he was berating for some past offence was in fact Alan Hayworth (pronounced Howarth), general secretary of the Parliamentary Labour Party.
