Economically minded institutions will benefit most under a new programme allowing them to bid for cash to improve their estates, funding chiefs propose. The Higher Education Funding Council for England will devote Pounds 30 million a year for the next three years to improve university estates. An identical sum will go towards improving research laboratories. The money will be shared among institutions showing high quality research, sound future research plans, collaboration with other bodies and value for money.
