Despite increased knowledge about drugs, police still stereotype users, says new research from Bradford University.
Bruce Cohen has looked at police attitudes towards drug users and concludes that they generally divide them into two categories. They see cannabis users and suppliers as "respectable", while those involved with other illegal drugs are "rough". Mr Cohen, says the police still stereotype drug users as being dirty and shabby, unemployed and from council estates.
