John Major will have some fellow feeling for Alumnus to be Proud of No. 116, Ernesto Zedillo Ponce de Leon, currently president of Mexico and with the prospect of leading a sclerotic ancien regime over the nearest precipice. Mr Zedillo this week presided over the heaviest defeats ever suffered by the splendidly-named Institutional Revolutionary Party.
Mr Zedillo had an extensive higher education including degrees from the Instituto Politecnica Nacional of Mexico City, Yale and Colorado. But the significant bit in terms of acquiring political skills appears to have been studying Planning and Managing Public Sector Projects at Bradford University, during which he was shown around the House of Commons by the university's chancellor, then Labour leader Harold Wilson.
