Scottish higher education institutions will win almost Pounds 1.5 million in extra funding next session to reward subjects rated as excellent in the 1996-97 quality assessments by the Scottish Higher Education Funding Council.
SHEFC's funding announcement coincides with the publication of 35 new reports, 15 of which were rated excellent, 19 highly satisfactory, and one satisfactory. SHEFC rewards excellent ratings with 5 per cent extra funded student places, and Glasgow University has won Pounds 566,000 for excellent in cellular and molecular biology, organismal biology, English, French studies and veterinary medicine. Other winners are Edinburgh University with Pounds 438,000, Aberdeen University with Pounds 225,000, Dundee University with Pounds 113,000, St Andrews University with Pounds 88,000 and Stirling University with Pounds 36,000.
