Fifth framework research programme

August 8, 1997

The European Commission has proposed boosting its forthcoming fifth framework research programme with a budget of Ecu 16.3 billion (Pounds 10.7 billion), writes Olga Wojtas.

The proposed budget for the 1998-2002 programme compares with Ecu 13.2 billion (Pounds 8.7 billion) for the current fourth framework research programme.

But the Council of Ministers is expected to seek a lesser increase when it meets after the summer break, and will have to thrash out a joint budget decision with the European Parliament by next spring.
