So what do you give the man with a six-figure salary and a knighthood? Vice chancellors recently found an ingenious solution when bidding farewell to retiring chairman Gareth Roberts. At what was scheduled to be his last meeting of the main committee of the Committee of Vice Chancellors and Principals they presented the very Welsh Roberts with a 6ft daffodil. It remains to be seen whether future meetings will be enlivened by his brandishing the outsize national symbol in the manner of Max Boyce.
